The Are Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Otunba Gani Adams has stated that Yoruba people of the Southwest will support any presidential candidate who is truly committed to the peaceful coexistence of the people of the country in all facets of our national life.
Every region of the country, he said, must be allowed to harness its natural resources and human potentials to its best advantage by allowing autonomy in a true federalism.
He made this statement when former Governor of Ogun State and the Deputy Director General/Chairman, (South) of the PDP presidential campaign Council, Otunba Gbenga Daniel led a team of some stakeholders in the South west geopolitical zone to pay a courtesy call on him at his Lagos residence on Saturday.
He emphasised that restructuring is very key in our march towards nationhood and a candidate who preaches this as one of its core agenda in the coming election will be considered above others.
According to him, “The coming election will be based on ideologies rather than partisanship or sentiments as it was in the past.”
Otunba Adams, who is also the national coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) said Otunba Gbenga Daniel, to him is one Nigerian he holds in high esteem as a unique personality imbued with exemplary leadership qualities. He revealed how Otunba Daniel averted what could have been a bloody scenario in the Yorubaland when two factions of the group were enmeshed in battle of supremacy some years back. According to him, it was Otunba Daniel who waded into the matter and established a lasting truce between the leaders and members of the two factions forestalling what could have snowballed into violent unrest.
In response, Otunba Daniel thanked the Are Ona Kakanfo for the warm reception, words encouragement and support.
He stated that the schism in the polity where it appears the Yoruba people are not getting it right in the governance of the country especially at the centre was one of the reasons he got involved in national politics which took him round the country on about three occasions. With the experience garnered and the emergence of the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the PDP’s presidential candidate, he affirmed that there will be a complete turnaround in the fortune of the South west following Atiku victory in the coming polls. All hands, he said must be on deck to ensure that Atiku wins.
He assured that he is convinced of the electoral promises of Atiku Abubabar who he described as a thorough and visionary politician who is so passionate about the Nigerian project, a lover of the Yoruba people, a honest and true Nigerian who will not say what he could not do.
In a similar event, former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Ayodele Fayose has reiterated his commitment to the victory of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar in the coming general election, pledging to work assiduously with Otunba Gbenga Daniel and other leaders in the region to mobilise the of the South west towards effecting change of leadership at the presidency in 2019.
