APC Lambasts PDP Over Claims On Ekiti Deaths

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has described as “irresponsible, fallacious and ill-informed” the claims by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state that cases of assassination had soared after Governor Kayode Fayemi was sworn in on October 16, 2018.

Following last week night shooting of Ekiti State lawmaker, Hon Michael Adedeji, that resulted in his death on Monday, PDP State Chairman, Gboyega Oguntuwase, had in a press statement accused the Fayemi’s two-week administration of encouraging assassination without response to check the trend.

But in a statement by APC Publicity Secretary, Ade Ajayi, the party said PDP was “irresponsibly distorting facts and history” by claiming that the state had never witnessed the spate of assassinations like in the two-week administration of Governor Fayemi.

Ajayi explained that history had recorded the former administration of Governor Ayodele Fayose as the period of routine murders of promising Ekiti indigenes through state-sponsored assassinations.

He said: “The list is endless, including Dr Ayodeji Daramola and Tunde Omojola in 2006 while the murders of Kehinde Fasuba and Omolafe Aderiye were allegedly linked to the activities of armed gangs allegedly working for PDP leaders.

“In December 2016 alone during Fayose’s second term, three men were murdered within four days.

“A Superintendent of Police (SP), Idowu Taiwo, was killed and abandoned in his car handcuffed after three gunmen abducted him at a relaxation joint along Ikere-Ado road in the state capital.

“A day earlier, Kunle Enisan, an engineer, was abducted on his way home along Afao-Ado road, Ado-Ekiti. His dead body was found by the roadside, sparking anger and outrage that shook the state capital.

“Also a day after this incident, Wale Adeniyi, a graduate entrepreneur in Ikere-Ekiti, was found dead along Iju-Ikere road after an encounter with gunmen.

“All these killings happened because Fayose’s administration as a policy kept armed gangs and criminals in the Government House after taking N300m monthly security vote to provide security but the former governor refused to spend one kobo for the security of Ekiti people, even as he stopped funding the security arrangement that Fayemi instituted during his first term to maintain peace.

“In fact, the killings in the northern axis of the state around Oke-Ako were as a result of Fayose dismantling of a well-funded security system put in place in that area by Fayemi, resulting in herdsmen’s threats that claimed the lives of some residents.

“Again, Fayose refused to fund the multi-million naira Police Crime Detection/Tracking Device facility inaugurated by Fayemi at the State Police Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti, thus leading to a collapse of a security system that kept criminals at bay.”

Ajayi added that as recently as this year, two members of APC, Mr. Williams Olawuyi Aiyegoro popularly known as Willy and Ayo Ayodeji were allegedly assassinated by suspected agents of Fayose’s administration.

He said it is unfortunate that a party in government during these unparalleled murders of innocent and responsible Ekiti people would be the one that would shamelessly seek to mislead the public and characteristically blackmail Fayemi’s administration of two weeks for not addressing the problems created by PDP’s irresponsible leadership in the state in four years.
