“Fellow citizens : About to undertake the arduous duties that I have been appointed to perform by the choice of a free people, I avail myself of this customary and solemn occasion to express the gratitude which their confidence inspires and to acknowledge the accountability which my situation enjoins. While the magnitude of their interests convinces me that no thanks can be adequate to the honour they have conferred, it admonishes me that the best return I can make is the zealous dedication of my humble abilities to their service and their good”
Andrew Jackson, March 4, 1829.
A man who enjoys responsibility gets it while a man who wants authority may lose it. Beyond one’s love for power, the ability to deliver should rank first in a sane society. Drawing inspiration from Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States of America, who understood what it meant to lead a people who needed his service, Dr Kayode Fayemi is on his way to making history as he emplaces responsible and responsive governance in Ekiti state.
Loathe or love him, Dr John Kayode Fayemi is a workaholic and a refined democrat. With a clearcut understanding of what 21st century governance entails as opposed to some banal populist ideas that jerked public opprobrium from sister States in the last administration, Governor Fayemi has, in few days demonstrated seriousness. First, he set the ball rolling with a return to the age long Awo’s ideal of free education by bringing back free education at primary and secondary levels in Ekiti state.
Government and governance couldn’t have sailed through without some key appointments. Dr Kayode Fayemi, being a man that knows what he wants didn’t wait till God knows when to call out young eminent citizens of Ekiti State to help render essential services in the development of a new Ekiti State. As if that wasn’t enough, as part of the efforts to reposition tertiary education in Ekiti State, Governor Fayemi had had briefings and interface with all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies, set up visitation panels for Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, the College of Education, Ikere -Ekiti , and the School of Health Technology, Ijero- Ekiti, as contained in his executive orders signed within the week. Ordinarily, one would have expected an average Governor to be in the mood of celebration but Governor Fayemi is not unaware of the herculean tasks of bringing lasting succor to the people of Ekiti -State who have been plundered and raped by the immediate past Governor of Ekiti- State.
Taste may differ but image is everything. This underscores why the new Governor of Ekiti- State has directed a rejig of the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti- State in his executive order 002, to ensure that it works optimally while laundering the image of the land of honour, provides entertainment, educates and informs the populace, in the true sense of it.
We don’t need a soothsayer to tell us that good times are here again in the land of honour as the Governor has approved the whopping sum of 200 million naira for teachers as car and housing loans. Within a short time, the ever vivacious JKF has met with traditional rulers, donor agencies and relevant government agencies to ensure that Ekiti people get a return on their trust and thumbs.
Before long, the fruits would be ripe for everyone, to harvest.
