Ogun APC councillors protest, ask NWC to recognise Akinlade gov candidate

Samuel Awoyinfa, Abeokuta

No fewer than 200 councillors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, Ogun State chapter, on Monday, staged a peaceful protest in Abeokuta, asking the National Working Committee of the party to recognise the candidacy of the consensus candidate of the Yewa Elders Council, Adekunle Akinlade.

The councillors who were armed with placards with various inscriptions stormed the Arcade Ground within the state secretariat at Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, around 10am.

Some of the inscriptions on the placards are: ‘We want justice in Ogun APC, give us Triple A’, ‘Oshiomhole, Osibajo, we want justice in Ogun State and ‘Minority cannot take charge over majority’ among others.

They were said to be on a solidarity visit to the seat of government to register their demand with the state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

However, the governor was busy at the state executive council meeting and thereafter inaugurated the new Chief Judge of the state, Mosunmola Dipeolu.

The state chairman of the APC, Chief Derin Adebiyi, later addressed them. He commended them for the peaceful manner they conducted themselves but further warned them never to resort to violence.

While he asked them to remain steadfast in their demand, he explained that the elders and party leaders in the state were working to resolve the political impasse.

He said, “I want to commend you for the peaceful manner you have conducted yourselves. In Ogun State, we are not known for violence.

“We have seen all the messages on the placards. I want you to remain steadfast in your demand, nothing negative will happen to the mandate you have given to Akinlade.

“The elders and party leaders are looking into the matter. I want to urge you to continue to be peaceful, don’t fight anybody.”
