“Lagos Biennial is an opportunity for the growing creative community to take a place at the table concerning contemporary art in Nigeria and the World. It is an opportunity to bridge the gap between a more youthful industry and foster inclusive dialogue.”
Tosin Oshinowo, Curator
On 3rd November 2018, the Omenka Gallery Ikoyi Lagos will be hosting stakeholders for the Lagos Biennial Symposium. The event will provide a platform to discuss the merits and the challenges from the first edition of the biennial via an interactive session.
Founder Folakunle Oshun will also be taking this opportunity to introduce the 2019 curatorial team comprised of Tosin Oshinowo, Hansi Gordon-Momodu and Antawan Byrd.
“We hope to show fresh and challenging work, and we’re really interested in experimenting with modes and sites of presentation. We also want to build on the first edition’s emphasis on commissioning projects that make use of the city’s resources. This is to say that we want artists from different parts of the world to come to Lagos, take up residence, and physically produce work in dialogue with the city.”
Antawan Byrd, Curator
The curatorial team will unveil and discuss information surrounding the second edition of the Lagos Biennial, scheduled for 26th October until 23rd November 2019. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.
“The Lagos Biennial was established by and for artists. Its very existence is a bold, perhaps audacious move reflecting the ingenuity of a new generation of artists who are ready to claim their seat at the table. The ambition to lead a conversation around contemporary art practices in Nigeria and beyond, on the world stage, belies the somewhat fluid and responsive structure offered by the
Director Folakunle Oshun. This inherent tension makes for
a biennial brimming with possibility.”
Hansi Momodu-Gordon, Curator
