Sen Ashafa writes open letter to Lagos East voters

Dear Good People of Lagos East Senatorial District, Friends and Well-Wishers,
There comes a time when the affairs of men, having gone full circle, makes it expedient to
contemplate a course of action as this. This message is a clarion call to every resident of
Somolu, Bariga, Kosofe, Ibeju-Lekki, Ikorodu, Epe, Agboyi-Ketu, Eredo, Igbogbo-Baiyeku,
Ijede, Imota, Ikorodu-North, Ikorodu-West, Ikosi-Isheri, Ikosi- Ejinrin, Lekki and all Lagosians in
general. Power has always belonged to the people and in 2019, as the general elections draw
near, it will not be different. The power still rests with the people through the ballot. As we
advance towards the 2019 elections, I would like to urge you all to be responsive to this great
power that you hold – the power of choice. To be able to choose is a power so great that the
consequences of its use, or misuse, are always life-changing and defining.
Year after year, since 2011, I have kept faith with you as your senator in the 7 th and 8 th
sessions of the National Assembly. Through your contributions at our various townhall
meetings and constituency outreaches, you also kept faith through your tremendous show of
support and constructive criticisms which have helped to make me a better lawmaker and also
make Lagos East a shining example of what it means to have a responsive senator.
However, there is still a lot of work to be done. The 2019 elections present a clear opportunity
to take us to the next level, hence my campaign theme: Together We Can Do More.
#TogetherWeCanDoMore is a rallying call to all supporters of the 2019 Ashafa mandate. More
importantly, it is a call to identify with the continuity of effective representation and the
consolidation of worthwhile achievements both at the senate and the constituency levels.
Of critical note here is the ongoing collection of Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) which is the
only instrument by which you can wield your power to choose and elect a credible candidate in
the 2019 elections. The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has been hard at work

towards ensuring that no voter remains disenfranchised. I urge you all to kindly complement
the efforts of the commission by showing up at the INEC office in your respective LGAs and
LCDAs to pick up your PVCs.
Secondly, our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), having come to power at the
federal level by the power of the ballot, is also implementing democratic initiatives that will
strengthen its internal democracy. I take pride in our National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu,
who continues to drive party reforms in this regard. Another major pointer to this is the directive
by the APC National Chairman, H.E. Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to the various APC State
Chairmen, including the amiable APC Lagos State Chairman, Hon. Tunde Balogun, on the
need to ensure that party candidates are elected through direct primaries.
In the light of this, there is no other sign to be seen or heard which clearly points to my earlier
assertion that the power to choose still belongs to the people. It is on this premise that I enjoin
all progressives, young and old, to make an emphatic show of this assertion by coming out en
masse to register as bona fide members of the APC. As a member of the party, your power is
duly exercised at the party primaries where you can outrightly determine who goes ahead to
represent the party at the 2019 general elections.
To register as a member of the APC, please visit the closest APC Ward Office nearest to you
or the APC State Secretariat on Acme Road in Ikeja. Let us make this registration a success
and show that our party has what it takes to deepen our democracy.
I love you all. Thank you for your time.
Yours Sincerely,
Senator ‘Gbenga Ashafa
Lagos East Senatorial District
