Ahead of the 2019 Presidential election, Nigerian youths of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds have been asked to vote for radical journalist, Mr Omoyele Sowore.
In a statement issued in Zamfara on Friday, the South West Progressive Youth Coalition, (SWPYC) said youths, by their population have the power to create a paradigm shift in the 2019 Presidential poll. The statement was signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Mr Yomi Peter Ogunsona. The statement was made available to Irohinoodua.
The group which is a coalition of 35 different youth-driven organisations, mainly in the South West said Nigeria has continued to suffer the double affliction of ‘corruption and exclusion of young people from governance.”
He said “Youths constitute 60 percent of Nigerian population. We should take a clue from what took place in France. Nigerians must put an end to the cycle of leaders that have been on the same stage for half a century. Nigerians need a new beginning. We need a new orientation. We need a sharp break from the past.”
SWPYC said youths in the country have been ‘blackmailed, abused, attacked by the anti-people policies’ of the government and also excluded from changing the system from its ugly shape.
He said Sowore has been spreading messages of hope across Nigeria and that the responses from younger people “have been quite amazing.”
According to him, across the country, inspite of the ethnic and religious differences, one thing is prevalent: Poverty and illiteracy. “The greatest inventions in the world are products of human imagination. There can be nothing more destructive than for a leadership to condemn the human mind to illiteracy. This is a fertile ground for violence, drug abuse and evil plots against the society itself.
He said more than 70 percent of Nigerians have no access to quality education, free health and opportunities to develop their potentials.
Ogunsona said Mr Sowore offers hope for Nigerians who are daily traumatise by a parasitic economy, corruption and dehumanization. He said the people ruling Nigeria are outdated and are not in tune with the modern times saying that their leadership style has further polarise the country
“We cannot continue to vote for leaders that have no fresh ideas, but have constrained themselves to repeating the policies of discrimination, hate, corruption and gross maladministration.”
According to him, Sowore is a revolutionary brand that will reunite Nigerians and bring revive the floundering fortunes of the country.
