Moji Damisa Tribute to Ras kinomo

regaI was in school yet in a hurry to exhale. You were already doing your thing at the Floating Bar on the Marina. Don-Gee, your guy, your admirer, your friend…he believed so much and convinced me to make your gig. Floating Bar I went and as the boat swayed to the gentle rhythm of the calm waters of the Atlantic, we met for the first time. You spinned the vinyl that night and on the high we danced to our hearts content until we felt dizzy. A few months after that, you came visiting…to our humble flat in Ogba. As I saw you off, I asked when your first album would be released…Jah Know…was your response. I smiled silently and wished you well…then the Airforce Base Friday Night Jamz had a blessing of your uniqueness. School over, I faced my career where our paths would cross again for you had become a huge star. Your debut was a mega outing. I was proud to be associated. As overwhelmed as I was by your stardom, I predicted you’d clean out the NMA awards as you did. Many accused me of having an insight but they did not fathom the genius of your work, the magic of your being; but I knew. Over the years, we met at events, your warmth, your modesty, your humility and the fact that you never forgot…I held you in awe all along and blessed God that our paths crossed. Abacha came and most stars ran from the raging fire to sing and cry about injustice from higher hills where their voices would not be drowned. I was to go but just when it was time, I faltered for my demons were many and I was afraid of carrying them with me…and then came democracy and our stars all came home to shine. I was happy as I watched from afar with special interest in you, my brother and those others whose friendship is for a lifetime. Only a couple of weeks ago, I had stapled the comment ‘Congratulations, living legends’ on Orits’ post of you both. I couldn’t have known that I would write this today. Ras, now you are a star in Heaven where you will continue to bless the world with your unique creative works and your good soul. Rest in peace, great son of Jah. Jah Knows my brother. I celebrate you, best of the best.
