On Tuesday,May 29,2018,the president and the Commander in- Chief,Nigeria Armed Forces,Muhammad Buhari addressed the Nation,to commemorate the Democracy Day as well as his administration’s third( 3rd) year. The well delivered speech was broadcast on television and radio across the country.
During the course of the president’s broadcast, which lasted about an hour, some staff of a popular private television station,CHANNELS,that was part of the broadcast were heard in the background mocking the president as he delivered his speech flawlessly and seamlessly. Words like: what is he saying, this speech is too long,he should leave etc. Such words by media men against Mr president were derogatory.
According to National Broadcasting Commission Code of Code, media men are not supposed to be partisan or bias in the discharge of their professional responsibilities.
This organisation found the actions of these media men against the number one citizen of the country as an affront, irresponsible, unreasonable, unethical and unprofessional.
Journalism is a noble profession. It is the fourth realm of the Estate, after the Executive,Legislature and the Judiciary. Journalists are regarded globally as partners in progress to the government and the development of any country.
In view of this ugly incident, here are our demands:
* NBC should investigate this nauseating incident and bring the culprits to book
* The Management of Channels TV must tender an unresolved apology to the President
* The apology must be published in at least, four( 4) Nigerian National Newspapers, The Guardia,The Nation,Punch and The Daily Post
* CHANNELS should broadcast the apology on its station, morning and night for seven(7) consecutive working days
* Failure for CHANNELS to comply with all the above demands,NBC must sanction CHANNELS Television appropriately.
Finally,we implore our media men to exercise great caution and bring to play high level of professionalism when they do their job, especially as the country approaches the 2019 General elections.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Gbadegesin Olanrewaju Daud
