The old Keseu Market in Okesa, Ado-Ekiti was constructed by governor Ayodele Fayose during his first term, the market served local traders so well that no one would have thought it will one day be pulled down, at least it was well planned and not disturbing traffic flow, hence no reason to go down.
Same was not the thought of Mr. Fayose in his second coming. Ado-Ekiti metropolis between 2014 and 2018 witnessed a drastic infrastructural overhaul that so many buildings had to give way for modernity. One of the buildings that had to go was the Keseu Market. No doubt its demolition affected welfare of families. Though families were affected, the infrastructural transformation witnessed left many unconcerned about plight of those affected.
Same wasn’t the case with governor Fayose. About two/three months ago, Fayose commenced the construction of a modern Keseu Market with 72 stalls and 6 restrooms. The market was commissioned yesterday with a promise that phase two of same size will be constructed by the PDP flag bearer in July 14 Ekiti gubernatorial election, Prof. Kolapo Olusola after swearing in.
To many of us, it’s just a market construction, what’s the big deal one would say. That is not the case with the market women, the traders. The atmosphere, the candour and their look at the commissioning showed it meant the world to them.
They were in beautiful attires, their Mary Kay so perfect and the smiles on their face, so real. They even conducted a parade for the governor in appreciation of the modern market.
Highpoint of the ceremony was the presentation of wraps of pounded yam with a pot full of vegetable soup and assorted meat to the governor and his entourage. When they brought the food, I thought within myself that the Governor won’t eat it for reasons I will like to keep to myself.
But alas, He ate!
He ate a wrap in full glare of the crowd and even called his deputy to join him. Though governor Fayose is known for stunts, the fact that he ate a delicacy prepared by the Iyaas surprised not a few. The crowd was estatic about it no doubt.
The governor proceeded from Keseu Market to commission the Greenland House, Headquarters of the Greenland Group, a medical facility put in place by the Chairman, Ekiti State House of Assembly Committee on Information, Dr. Samuel Omotoso so I couldn’t interview the Iyaloja of Ekiti State to know how she felt about the governor taking her food. I will definitely ask her the next time I see her.
