We condemn in it entirety the extravagant trip that the ministry of Health under the leadership of Professor Isaac Adewole will be embarking on to Geneva, Switzerland at a time that the health sector in the country is in total collapse.
We read a report by an online medium that the minister and many heads of agencies and parastatals under Ministry of health will be traveling to Geneva, Switzerland for the World Health Assembly when the country’s health sector is in total shamble with many dying in their different homes as a result of the ongoing strike by health workers in the country.
In the report, the minister was alleged to have budgeted a whopping sum of N350M for over 40 health chief executives to travel to Geneva, Switzerland for a conference that only the minister and few others would have ordinarily represented Nigeria.
If the minister is someone that values human life, he would not have thought of going on a jamboree trip to Switzerland when the entire health sector in Nigeria is on a shut down.
The Nigerian government must make a concerted effort in ensuring that Nigerians have an affordable and adequate access to health care system.
The right to health is the economic, social and cultural right to a universal minimum standard of health to which all individuals are entitled. Nigerians must not be denied of this basic right.
The Federal government of Nigeria must as a matter of urgency develop a strategy in reducing the disparities in the quality of health care afforded to Nigerians living in the interior and those who live in urban centers.
Professor Isaac Adewole has failed in his responsibility as a minister of health in finding a lasting solution to the lingering strike that has crippled the health sector in the country.
This same Minister has consistently defended President Muhammadu Buhari’s medical trip abroad when he should be devoting his time to formulating policies that will improve Nigeria’s health care system.
We therefore, call for the sack of the health minister for negligence of duty and incompetence in the handling of health care system in Nigeria.
