Bishop Kukah Charges Other Governors to learn from Mimiko as he Prays for Successor like the Governor

Prominent and upfront Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Hassan Kukah, has called on state Governors in Nigeria to emulate the style of leadership of Ondo state Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

 

Kukah gave this advice on Tuesday while speaking at a dinner at the Dome in Akure, as part of activities marking this year’s Conference of Catholic Bishops in Nigeria.

The Catholic Priest, who was impressed by what he saw in Ondo state, said state Governors do not necessarily need to travel to the state to learn best practices but can do so when attending the Governors’ Forum meeting.

 

“For us in Nigeria, we have always believed that solution to bad government is to hand over everything to the private sector. So, I am quite pleased with the fact that things are working here and it is quite consoling to know that if you happen to live in Ondo state and unfortunately involve in an accident, that help will come in about 12 to 15 minutes.

 

“These are things people in other parts of the world are taking for granted. I hope Governors compare notes when they hold meetings because initiative such as the Ondo Emergency Medical Services is worthy of comparison and you do not need to come to Ondo state before you know about it.”

 

In this same vein, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, said they have seen the good works of Governor Mimiko and he can say that the Governor is not in power but a position of service.

 

Others who added their voices are Archbishop of Abuja Archdiocese, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, Host Bishop and Bishop of Ondo Diocese, Jude Arogundade, they all said there are excited that Ondo is a peaceful state and that they also cherish the good partnership between Government and the church which according to Bishop Arogundade can be referred to as true democracy.

 

Over 30 catholic bishops were present for the conference which started last Thursday and ended on Tuesday.
