EFCC Witness Claims Documents Against Saraki Got Burnt, EFCC Fails To Present Affidavit Submitted by Bank.

Michael Wetkas, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Wednesday, April 20, revealed that some documents relating to the transactions on the foreign bank accounts of the Senate president got burnt.

He disclosed this at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), while being cross examined by Paul Usoro, one of the counsels to Bukola Saraki, the Senate president. Wetkas was asked to clarify some accounting transactions but mentioned that he did not have it. He explained that the Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB) issued an affidavit for those documents showing that the transactions existed. Usoro asked that the affidavit be produced but when Wetkas flipped through his documents, he realised it was not there when he said maybe it was part of the documents that got burnt.

From your experience there should be another document indicating that the funds have been transferred,” said Usoro.

But the other member of the panel interrupted and asked Usoro if the questions are relevant which he replied that they were.

However, Wetkas replied that there was indeed an affidavit but said he had not seen the document. He said: “Although the affidavit is not here but the bank furnished us with an affidavit.

“Several telexes from American Express and facts are here from the American Express Bank. “All the transfers request made by the investigating team to provide information was an off shoot of the debit transaction that were already consummated on that account which showed that the bank carried out “There is no doubt that the transaction was actually carried out by American Express Bank.” It will be recalled that on Monday, April 18, Wetkas claimed that Saraki bought a property for N522m, which he failed to declare it at the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).
