” Another Macabre Dance By Umana and APC”
When Michael Wolmegut first captured the horror and catastrophe associated with Danse Macabre in 1493, social scientists and political analysts paid little or no attention to his work. About 600 years after , the idea behind the prose found greater expression in the political scenario of Akwa Ibom state.
The work of Wolmegut makes greater sense in respect of the mendacious publication allegedly sponsored by agents of the APC in Akwa Ibom State aimed at deriding the person of His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel.
Titled “Udom Emmanuel’s Multi Billion Naira Home”, the writer and purveyors of this ‘skewed proposition’ have attempted in their infantile quest to smear the image of Governor Emmanuel through a spurious allegation of building a multi billion Naira house in his home town, Awa Iman as Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
Although this does not deserve the attention of any intellectual and those who have followed the trajectory of political events in the state closely in recent times, it must however, be put in the right perspective to avoid the innocent public from being swayed by this undiluted falsehood and conspiracy theory because, as Gil Goutemanche puts it, “Propaganda is as powerful as heroin. It surreptitiously dissolves all capacity to think”.
First, it must be asked: was the “multibillion Naira home” allegedly belonging to Governor Emmanuel built after his swearing- in as Governor of Akwa Ibom state as alleged by agents of Umana and APC? The answer to this is No because the said “multibillion Naira home” accommodated hundreds of guests for the governor’s reception on the 29th of May, 2015.
The said house project has been on-going simultaneously with the ‘extension’ wing of the the governor’s private residence in Ewet Housing Estate which was built over 8 years ago. Again, in anticipation of the avalanche of people during and after electioneering campaigns as the political pendulum tilted in his favor, there was need to put up a home that would give impetus to the new responsibility. Who wouldn’t do same? Maybe, Umana Okon Umana.
Secondly, What was Governor Emmanuel’s pedigree in relation to owning any home of his taste?
The Good Book posits in clear terms that “My people perish for lack of Knowledge”. Governor Udom Emmanuel had risen to the apex of his banking career. He was an Executive Director at Zenith Bank Plc and had sat at the board of African Finance Corporation.
Would it therefore be surprising, contentious or an aberration for a professional and global personality with over 17 years of sound and proven managerial profile to build a house if his choice in his village? That again, is the crescendo of argumentum ad hominen, aimed at smearing the person of a perceived political adversary.
Thus, Governor Emmanuel’s meteoric rise in the private sector which correlates his gains in life is a clear departure from the accumulative disposition and instinct of the sponsor of this smear campaign whose life and finances cannot be divorced from the public treasury yet owns some of the most affluent homes and properties across the country.
Finally, another contending issue at this point which needed unambiguous clarity is the antecedent of the sponsors and purveyors of this smear campaign in juxtaposition with that of Governor Emmanuel? It is apposite to note that the All Progressives Congress and it’s governorship candidate in the April 2015 polls are the pivots of the conspiracy theory against Governor Emmanuel.
With their avowed determination to capture the realms of leadership in the state by all means, irrespective of the need of the state and its people, Umana Okon Umana and his party have formed an alliance with the Hausa/ Fulani imperialists with the aim of exploiting the the resources of Akwa Ibom and enthroning a regime of primitive accumulation of which he had gained mastery. A cursory and comparative assessment of the homes of a retired permanent secretary and SSG and that of former Executive Director of a multinational bank will reveal in bold relief who Mr Corruption is!
Thus, they have perfected a holistic strategy by galvanizing the DSS, a special online team, some of the local tabloids in the state and the western press, particularly the Nation and Punch Newspapers both controlled by APC’s national leader Bola Tinubu with the objective of creating a disconnect between the government of Governor Emmanuel and the people of Akwa Ibom State.
The totality of these explains the plethora of smear -campaigns against the Governor on the social media and the many falsehood by the APC media wing about the proceedings and prospects of the governorship election petition tribunal.
