Former Super Eagles coach, Adegboye Onigbinde, has expressed his support for the ex-Nigerian International footballer and one time Super Eagles’ Captain, Segun Odegbami, in his quest to become the next FIFA President, wishing him all the best.
It would be recalled that on Tuesday, Odegbami had confirmed his interest in the race to succeed the incumbent FIFA President, Sepp Blatter. While justifying his interest in the leadership of FIFA, Odegbami had said, “The current scandal at FIFA is the organization’s worst crisis in its 111 years of existence. Moving forward, FIFA thus require a new era of leadership that can restore the dignity of the noble sport and that of this esteemed international institution with global followership.
Times like this call for all concerned members of the global football family to contribute to the actualization of renewed objectives for FIFA by electing a deserving and qualified person, with the right character that can achieve the desired goals and restore confidence and integrity to the organization and its activities.”
Onigbinde, while reacting to this development, purportedly told completesportsnigeria.com that “I wish him all the best.”
It is on record that Odegbami guided Nigeria National team to its first African Nations title at the 1980 African Nations Cup.
Nicknamed Mathematical, Segun Odegbami was known for his football skills, speed and accurate crosses from the right wing on the pitch.
In his career as a footballer, Odegbami played for IICC Shooting Stars of Ibadan from 1970 to 1984. His last game was the 1984 African Champions Cup final defeat to Zamalek of Egypt. He is currently a columnist in Nigeria. The original source of the nickname “Mathematical” was because Segun Odegbami is a graduate of Engineering from The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
The election for the post of FIFA President is scheduled to hold on 26th of February, 2016 in Zurich, Switzerland.
