Following mysterious deaths in a community in neighbouring Ondo State, the Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka, has said there is no cause for alarm in the state.
He said the state had put on the alert the state’s disease surveillance and emergency response teams.
Soyinka explained that the residents of the state, living in border areas with Ondo State had been advised against travelling to those places that were affected.
He said, “These two teams had maintained close contact with the Ondo State authorities.
“We are monitoring Ogun Waterside Local Government Area closely and are sensitising our border communities to reduce cross-border movements to Ondo State for now.
“Given recent outbreaks, we are aware that the members of the general public may be worried. However, we wish to assure the people of Ogun State that there is no immediate cause for concern.”
No fewer than 17 people had reportedly died during the week as a result of a mysterious disease which broke out at Ode Irele in Ondo State.
The symptoms of the deadly disease are said to be sudden outset of blurred or lost vision, headache, loss of consciousness followed by death, all within 24 hours.
It was reported that blood tests were being carried out on collected samples of the victims, to ascertain if the deaths had been caused by ingested poisons or other infectious agents.
Soyinka said the disease surveillance teams put together by the state Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, during the Ebola outbreak, had been put on full alert.
He said such mysterious deaths had not occurred anywhere in the state.
