Human rights Lawyer, Femi Falana has asked the presiding Oba in Lagos to make no delay in apologizing to Igbos for his harsh statement towards them on Sunday when Eze Ndigbos (Igbo traditional rulers) of all the local governments in Lagos came to pay him a courtesy visit in his palace.
Mr Falana in a statement released today said the Oba’s diversionary threat is totally unacceptable as it is a mockery of the political objective of national integration.
“It is illegal as it clearly offends Section 42 of the Constitution which has prohibited discrimination on grounds of ethnicity, religion, political opinion, creed or sex,” Mr. Falana said.
He also says the Oba lacks the power to cause anyone to ‘die in the Lagoon within seven days,’ stating the threat constitutes a violation of the fundamental right of thousands of citizens to life. He however urged the Oba to apologize without delaying meanwhile The PDP in Lagos The Lagos State PDP Chapter has asked the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola to suspend the Oba of Lagos for the harsh statements he made towards Igbos living in Lagos towards the State’s governorship election.
In a statement issued today by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Taofik Gani, the party noted that the action was necessary in order to guarantee free, fair and credible elections in the state. The party also noted that, it had also alerted security agencies to hold the monarch responsible for any attack on non-indigenes or PDP members in Lagos.
Mr. Taofik in the statement however concluded that if the Governor remains silent about this threat, then they would assume the Oba was carrying out an assignment on behalf of the State.
