Students in various public-owned tertiary institutions in Oyo State – University of Ibadan (UI), Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH) and Oyo State College of Education (OYSCOED) – trooped out en masse Wednesday, to rally support for the re-election of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, come March 28.
During the walk-rally, organised by Student Integrity Group (SIG), students converged on the main entrance of the University of Ibadan. From there, they marched through Sango, Mokola/Roundabout, Government Road, to Total Garden Road, before they dispersed.
The students adorned T-shirts with Jonathan’s imprint, and were singing, while distributing to motorists, traders and passers-by pamphlets that captured projects which President Jonathan’s administration has accomplished.
In his address, Dr. Ismail Adewusi – immediate past chairman of WEMABOD Limited, one of the several companies in O’odua Investment – identified some of the needs why Jonathan should be re-elected. He said that the President has performed excellently, especially in the area of education.
“Now, our people are shouting change. But what kind of change do they think we are looking for in this country? Truth is, we need sustainable change, and the only way by which we can get it is to re-elect Jonathan. The messiah Nigeria needs is not in the All Progressives Congress (APC), but in PDP under President Jonathan.
“Just in four years, he has done a lot in the areas of agriculture, development, rail transportation, industrial policy and education that concerns us. These are just few of the things he has done. Also, he has created jobs and he would continue to generate more and more,” he observed.
Dr Adewusi added that President Jonathan will win in Oyo State, judging from things that have been seen and things he would still do before now till the election day.
In his speech, Mr. Adebowale Adebayo, Co-ordinator of the students’ body, posited: “President Jonathan has proven that he loves education; having established 12 new universities, with two specialised ones created purposely for educational advancement in the country.”
He promised that SIG will assist the students with their permanent voter’s card, to ensure that President Jonathan succeeds in the next election.
