The Nigeria Labour Congress [NLC] will today, February 11, 2015, elect a new president.
The outgoing President Abdulwaheed Omar has served his full tenure as the leader of the union, hence the election of a new President.
About one thousand, nine hundred and ninety-two delegates that represents workers from all the states of the federation as well as all sectors of the Nigerian economy, in the early hours of March 4, 2011, re-elected incumbent President, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar after the first four years of the first tenure to serve the next four years.
At the end of today’s election, Mr Omar will have served his full two tenures of four years each.
The battle for the union’s presidency has been narrowed down to two contenders: Comrade Joe Ajaero and Comrade Ayuba Wabba.
Comrade Issa Aremu, who was earlier tipped to win the election, has been allegedly returned unopposed as NLC National Vice President.
He also doubles as the President of Nigerian Textile Workers Union [NTWU].
Ajaero is the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees [NUEE] and NLC Deputy President, Wabba is the current President of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria [MHWUN].
With the exit of Aremu from the race, the odds favour Ajaero as 30 affiliate unions of the NLC have endorsed him for the office.
