Al-Hikmah University Ilorin has launched an unusual partnership with
phinnx.com to computerize their learning and collaboration needs.
As part of this partnership, Phinnx.com has deployed her facilities to
computerize Assignment processing, Anti-plagiarism, Course Material
distribution, Course and Assignment discussion threads, Enterprise
search system, Browser-based video conferencing, Illustrator tool,
Instant messenger, among other interesting features.
Students and members of staff of the department of physical sciences
were the first to subscribe to the initiative and they described it as
exciting and encouraging. Suleiman Basit, a 400 level student of
geology expressed tremendous admiration owing to the fact that “not
much noise was made about the partnership but it is the most exciting
learning system I have used”.
The highlights of phinnx.com is that it is entirely free, it is
available for most phones, tablets and PCs, and the Phinnx community
process allows any Phinnx user to request new features or upgrades
that will be beneficial to other users (and Institutions) without
financial charges. Students of Al-Hikmah University Ilorin were
unanimously pleased with the fact that it is a free system; which they
say is one of the reasons why students across the country frown at
computerization exercises.
Members of staff of the university were pleased with the community
process which they say will assist a relatively young institution into
aggressively computerizing its learning and collaboration needs at
very minimal costs.
It is noteworthy that Phinnx.com won the National Software Excellence
Award in 2012 as well as the Prof. CleopasAngaye Prize for Open Source
Development in the same year.
