Sen Obanikoro spoke to City people about his Ambition to become Lagos Governor and all,This is what he had to say about it
It has become like almost impossible in our democratic set-up to see parties choosing candidate for elective positions without recording rancour: Now within the PDP in Lagos, about 9 other individuals have also come out to express their interest in the Governorship ticket that you are also eyeing. How do you think the party will sail though this without a fresh crisis?
I studied in the U.S and in had my degree in Public Affairs. I am a good student of public administration and history. Once the process is free. We have leant our lessons, and we are not fools, so we won’t make the same mistakes we have made in the past again. We need to retrospection and come up with some bitter truths and reasonable conclusions that we need to embrace, to better our lots and advance the inherent opportunities that this new dispensation is bringing.
Is it true that the leaders of the PDP in Lagos have a preferred candidate for the Governorship slot, which may not be Obanikoro?
( Laughs) Well let me tell you this with all sense of seriousness. I have participated in about 9 elections. I have never been favored, and I have won all but 1. So, this should easily show you that I am not a politician that is giving to godfatherism. And I want to tell you that it will be sad, given the chequered history of PDP in Lagos, that at this stage, some people having seen the futility in trying to impose candidates on people will try to re-enact what has been identified to have been, to a reasonable extent, the cause of our failures. Basically, common sense is crucial to PDP going forward.
Talking about the recent elections in Ekiti and Osun States: a lot of fingers have been pointed at you based on your involvement. Some people say that you had a hand in the victory of the PDP in Ekiti and they also believe that you made a lot of moves to secure victory for your party in Osun too?
I am not bothered at all with those comments. There is nobody that doesn’t know me today to a proud member of the PDP. Infact, all that we have done to get victory for our party in those States you have mentioned are what I considered commendable. I am proud to be associated with someone like Ayo Fayose, a first class grassroots person, who worked tirelessly and is also very close to the people in the grassroots. He won the election in Ekiti because people trusted him and believes so much in him. For someone to now ascribe that to anything short of the people of Ekiti expressing themselves is very unfortunate. And I want to sincerely advise that the people of our generation should begin to play a different politics. And to that extent, I want to commend Kayode Fayemi and condemn his Party. Fayemi listened to the voice of the people.
