EKITI 2014: OPINION POLL RANKS, LABOUR PARTY, OPEYEMIBAMIDELE, HIGHEST IN ELECTION RATING.
The Labour Party Governorship Candidate, Hon Opeyemi Bamidele, MOB, has been rated most likely candidate to win the June 21st Governorship election in Ekiti State. This was the verdict of an opinion poll conducted by the Nigerian Workers Network (NIWON), an organization comprising representatives of workers, civil servants, Teachers, Local Government employees, Student bodies and other groups that constitute The Trade Union Congresses in Ekiti State.
In a sample conducted throughout the sixteen Local Government areas of Ekiti State, the Labour Party Candidate, Hon Opeyemi Bamidele polled 51.2%, Ex-governor, Ayodele Fayose of the PDP amassed 27.5%, while the incumbent Kayode Fayemi of the APC scored 21.35%. Kole Ajayi of the Accord Part had 2%.
The poll, according to the spokes person for NIWON, Dr (Mrs.) Tinuke Yesufu, was conducted to test the acceptability of the major candidates by the Labour force and various trade unions in Ekiti State. According to Dr. Yesufu this sample choice constitutes an integral and significant segment of the Ekiti State voting population.
80.7% voted for a change in the present leadership of the State and the enthronement of a more worker-friendly party and candidate.
66% rated high Labour Party’s choice of running-mate, a female Muslim and seasoned civil servant/local government administrator, while 78.7% of respondents wanted a candidate that would bring in fresh ideas and versatility into governance.
63.4% of the sample endorsed Labour Party’s Bamidele for humility, while Fayose scored 20% & Fayemi of APC had 16.6% for this quality.
On which candidate is most likely to impact positively on students & tertiary institutions, 63% endorsed Labour’s Bamidele, 30% Fayose of the PDP, while APC Fayemi got 7% approval rating.
Most of the respondents quoted Opeyemi’s student Unionism credentials as his Unique Selling Point, while 90% criticized Fayemi for the introduction of exorbitant school fees in tertiary institutions in Ekiti State.
The Nigeria Workers Network (NIWON) spokesperson, Dr Yesufu, while condemning the increasing spate of political violence that has characterized on-going campaigns in the State noted that another opinion poll would be conducted before the election.
