For those who have been following Nollywood for a long time, the name Victoria Alawiye will not sound strange. The actress is no doubt an epitome of beauty. Even though she has not been too active in the movie industry. In an interview with BON she explained the reason why she has not been featuring in Nollywood movies.
BON: Can we meet you?
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: My name is Victoria Alawiye the wife of BayoAlawiye am a mother of two children a boy and a girl.
BON: How long have you been married?
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: Have been married to Bayo Alawiye for the past 9 years.
BON: Your first child is like how old
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: She will be Eight (8) by June and my second son will be 5 this year.
BON: What do you do for a living?
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: Firstly I am a makeup artist and am also a professional skin care therapist but I am specialized in makeup.
BON: Rumor out there that you want to start a TV programme how true is that?
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: Well I am not just starting, it is on TV already, we started early January but I want to launch it officially for people who have not seen it or heard about it to know about it.
BON: What is the programme is all about?
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: It’s an entertainment programme it is a Yoruba programme but fully subtitle in English it promotes our traditional contemporary music in Nigeria, it is to promote Fuji, Juju, Apala, Waka and High life. I interview both stars and upcoming artists and it has different segment such has top three traditional music in Nigeria.
BON: What really inspired this project?
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: I am a graduate of theater art, I had my diploma in university of Ibadan where I met my husband “Bayo Alawiye” I proceeded to Lagos State University where I had my degree in theater art I was suppose to be an actress but I didn’t go into it because my husband is a director and also an actor. When we started having our kids I wanted to go into acting but he said no that since he is into it already that I shouldn’t go,I felt cheated because I have all what it takes to become an actress and even when I was growing up the people around me always said that “one day you will become either actress or lawyer” and there was even a vision when I was in secondary school inearly 90s then my father used to write our names and take it to church for prayer, they call the church “The Church of The Lord Aladura” we go to Tabborrar every 22nd of August, then he would write our name for the Prophetess to pray and see vision concerning our future but he never showed us because I am from a polygamous family so he didn’t want to show me or any one of us so that we wouldn’t say that the other girl future is brighter than our own to avoid issues and enmity amongst us, but somehow I saw the book and read through it, the Prophetess said that she saw a large number of people in front of me and that I was talking to them, even then I did not have it in mind to go for theater art after that revelation I had to settle for theater arts, when my husband said I should not go into acting I said okay but at least I can still go into entertainment programme so that is how I came about this project.
BON: What does your husband do to compensate you at least for going your dream?
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: Well he is the brain behind it, he is the producer of the programme he supports me with everything I need, such as, camera crew etc. Though it is my concept and the name of the programme is TIWA NI (it’s ours) we are trying to let people know that our own music is rich in culture than that of the western world, we are trying to make people go back to their sources. It is my concept but he has been so helpful.
BON: Back to university of Ibadan, that was where you met your husband and there is a rumor that your husband and Laide Bakare were also in the same department we want to know if three of you were friends?
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: Well I did not meet Laide Bakare in UI I think immediately she left was when I got my admission, I didn’t meet Laide Bakare and to me I don’t believe in that it is just a rumor Laide has been a family friend.
BON: You never felt insecure or jealous about her?
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: At all, because have two children and people don’t even believe I have two kids. My daughter is of my height so when they see her with me they say no that she’s my sister so I believe am still intact and I don’t feel insecure at all.
BON: How do you combine work and family?
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: Have been doing it for the past nine years so it has always been part of me.
BON: Comparing Nigeria TV programme to that of the western world, do you think we have gotten there?
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: We are still on our way there but I know and am hopeful that very soon we will be there. We are still on our way.
BON: What do you think we can do to make our own entertainment grow?
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: To make whatever we want to do believable, to make it real and we should always give enough explanation especially in the movie area most especially the accident scene, I listened to a radio programme one timewhere the presenter said in Nigerian movies where Juju or Cham is not featured is not a Nigerian movie because they believe in that. We should try to make it unique and try to move forward, everybody want to become a star but they don’t know the rudiment of theater arts they don’t know what it takes to be an actress they just want to jump in there, I will advise them to learn it, and stop killing our dream, our work and learn rudiments of being a professional in what they do.
BON: Don’t you sometime get the urge to act part time?
VICTORIA ALAWIYE: I don’t consider it at all, I was once with Wale Adenuga in one of his series “Omoye” I was part of it I was trying to build up my career then but when I met my husband I had to quit.
