The lawmakers accused the governor of ignoring them.
The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has summoned Governor Umaru Al-Makura to appear before it on Wednesday, March 19.
Ruling on the motion, the Speaker, Musa Mohammed, said he invoked Section 129 (C) of the 1999 Constitution to summon the governor.
“Based on the refusal of the governor to honour its invitation, the House hereby invokes Section 129 (C) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended to invite him to appear before the House on Wednesday, March 19,” the speaker said.
The resolution was reached after deliberations by the lawmakers on the governor’s refusal to attend a security meeting organized by the assembly to discuss the forthcoming local government elections scheduled for March 22.
The issue, which was brought under matters of public interest by the Majority Leader, Godiya Akwashiki, was accepted by majority of the lawmakers.
Mr. Akwashiki, who represents Nasarawa-Eggon West, said the governor had written to the House that he would not attend the session.
The lawmaker said the Assembly wrote letters of invitation to some stakeholders in the state to discuss issues of security and the local government election. He listed the other invitees to include Isa Mustapha-Akwai, the Chairman Nasarawa State Traditional Council, and Abdullahi Modibbo, the Chairman, Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC).
Also invited were the state Police Commissioner, Director of State Security Service, and Commandant, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.
Mr. Akwashiki said that while others promised to attend, the governor wrote to say he would not attend.
“The governor wrote a reply to me today stating that he will not to attend the meeting because the agenda was not stated in the letter,” he said.
The Deputy Speaker, Elisha Agwadu (PDP -Obi 1), subsequently moved a motion that the Assembly use its power to compel the governor to appear before it.
“Since the governor has refused to honour our invitation to discuss important issues affecting the state, the house should use the necessary constitutional provisions to compel him to appear,” he said.
Ibrahim Muluku (PDP-Nassarawa-Eggon East) who seconded the motion, urged members to support the motion in the interest of peace and development of the state.
Mr. Al-Makura is a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, while the Assembly is dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
