The administration of sports in the country is gradually being affected following the failure of the former Minister of Sports and Chairman National Sports Commission (NSC), Bolaji Abdullahi to handover the running of the sports commission to his successor, Dr Tamuno Danagogo.
Abdullahi was fired last week Wednesday, March 5, 2014 by President Goodluck Jonathan and sworn in Danagogo immediately as his replacement. But feelers from the NSC indicated that for exactly ten days now after he was relieved of his appointment, Abdullahi has failed to turn up for the ceremonial hand over which has been rescheduled twice since his sack.
The former Minister, who was sacked while in London and instantly cancelled his trip to Sopot, Poland for the IAAF Indoor Championship, was billed to handover the administration of sports to the new helmsman on Tuesday. It was postponed to Wednesday and Abdullahi still failed to show up. The new minister, who appeared before the Senate committee on sports and social development on Tuesday for budget defense of sports commission, had to rely on the director general of the NSC, Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye for the defense of the budget.
SA to the former minister, Julius Ogunro, when contacted on why it is taking his boss forever to handover to his successor in office said it is not compulsory that his boss must handover to his successor. He said communication is ongoing between his boss, DG of the sport s commission and the new minister of sports. “I don’t know what you people are talking about handover. Handover is not a compulsory thing.
It is not necessary that a former minister must perform handover ceremony. When we came in, nobody handed over to us. What the new minister needs is to get briefed from the DG about what his predecessor did. The DG and new minister have met with my boss and discussion is still ongoing between them,” he said.
