The zonal campaign office of Senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Alhaji Ibrahim Gobir, was Saturday set ablaze by suspected political thugs at Gandu area of Sokoto metropolis.
THISDAY checks revealed that the building, which comprised one block of 10 offices, was set ablaze by the arsonists around 4.00am on Saturday.
THISDAY also gathered that a retail outlet for Sokoto Cement and MTN recharge cards in the building were also gutted by fire.
Speaking to newsmen in the area, Gobir, who spoke through his Special Assistant, Malam Mustapha Hamza, said the miscreants armed with cutlasses, invaded the area in the wee hours of the morning and set the All Progressive Congress (APC) zonal campaign office ablaze.
He stated stationery items, 100 water pumping machines, furniture and computers worth about N15 million were gutted by fire.
The lawmaker said suspected political opponents were behind the dastardly act, warning that 2015 election might be chaotic.
“Enemies of progress are behind this arson and we are suspecting political opponents. So, until something is done by the security operatives to check this ugly trend, the next election may be chaotic,” he said. He therefore, called on security operatives to be on alert in order to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous act.
However, the state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Shuaibu Lawal Gambo, who confirmed the incident, said the Police Command was yet to make any arrest in respect to the incident.
He disclosed that the command had already invited the security guard of the APC campaign office for questioning, with a view to unravelling those behind the arson. “The security guard of the campaign office is currently assisting the police in efforts to unravel the perpetrators,” he said.
Gambo called on the public to remain calm, assuring that the command was determined to fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act.
