Sunshine Stars International Football Club of Akure were on Friday afternoon involved in an accident along the Sagamu-Ore expressway when the team was returning to Akure from Ijebu-Ode, Ogun state where they have been in close camping ahead of the 2014 Nigeria Professional Football League season.
Although no death was recorded in the crash, 5 members of the team were reported to have been hospitalized after sustaining varying degree of injuries.
The Coach of the Akure Gunners, Assistant and Team Captain were said to have left Ijebu-Ode earlier before the second party were involved in the accident.
The 32-seater bus conveying the players was reported to have rammed into a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) at the J4 junction, a border town between Ondo and Ogun state.
A source at the Ondo State Ministry of Youths and Sports, who confirmed the incident through a text message, said “yes, the team was involved in an accident and five players are injured, but no one died.”
The Executive Director of the Ondo state Football Agency (ODSFA), Mike Idoko also said “5 players were injured and the team generally with the 32-seater bus have Insurance cover.”
