Emeritus Professor, Michael Filani of the Department of Geography, University of Ibadan is dead. The Ikole Ekiti-born professor, who was at a time Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the premier university, slumped and died in his Oluyole Extension home in Ibadan while watching the Nigeria/Ethiopia World Cup qualifying match on Sunday, 13th October 2013. With over 35 years of experience in teaching and research, his areas of emphasis include transport planning and development; economic geography; and regional development planning. He served in various capacities both within and outside the University of Ibadan.
Within the University, he served in the following positions: Chairman of the Consultancy Services Committee at the Faculty of Social Sciences (1981 – 1984) and Member Board of Directors (1985 – 1987). He was also Dean of the Faculty of the Social Sciences (1985 – 1987), Head of the Department of Geography (1990 – 1993) and the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) (1993 – 1995). He was President, the Nigerian Geographical Association, 1997-1998. He wrote and published more than 90 articles, technical and consultancy reports on transport, regional development and planning, particularly in Nigeria.
Prof was Late Goldie’s Uncle
