Nigeria’s leading political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has initiated moves towards building her youth structure into a strong and viable force. The move which is intended to unify all affiliated youth groups under the party into one unit has the blessing of the party leadership through her Acting National Youth Leader, Barrister Tanko Beji.
In an open letter dated 23rd of July, 2013 to all affiliated youth groups, Tanko Beji said that the harmonization of the various groups was necessary for the party and such unification would help harness the potentials therein for the further growth of the party. ‘We have decided to immediately commence the process of harmonization of the strengths of the affiliated Youth groups to prepare our party for the opportunities and challenges ahead in an ever-changing political arena’, he further stated.
The National Youth Leader also announced the names of members of the steering committee charged with the responsibility of driving the harmonization process. Their mandate includes: Finding and engaging all affiliated youth groups and unifying them as well as producing framework bordering on the leadership of the structure, operations and administration, laws and code of conduct as well as programmes and agenda. The committee which is chaired by Lai Labode who also chairs the PDP Youth Circuit has members from other affiliated youth groups.
Other members are Usman Ibrahim (Youth Trans Movement) as first Vice Chairman, Engr Nwosu (Youth Frontier) as second Vice Chairman while Bola Aboki of the Youth Vanguard will be the Secretary of the committee. The 13 member committee also has Naven Mohammed, Sunday Sado, Thompson Akpan Samuel, Christian Anenih, Raymond Dopkesi Jnr, Nenge Maagbe, and Solomon Gowin. The committee is expected to submit its report in the middle of August for communication and consideration of the National Working Committee of the party.
