APC appoints interim executive to run party

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has appointed a nine-member caretaker committee made up of three top officials of each of the three merging parties: Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN; Congress for Progressive Change, CPC; and All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP.

A former governor of Kano State and ANPP’s presidential candidate in the 2011 election, Ibrahim Shekarau, informed the Hausa service of the BBC on Monday that the three officials selected from each party, are the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer.

Mr. Shekarau, who is also a member of the 29-man merger committee, said the decision was taken to save time and make submissions to INEC for registration.

“Time is going and we need to make submissions for registration, it was therefore resolved that since the executive are going to serve in interim capacity we can as well submit the required nine officials and then come back to sort things out,” he said.

No quarrels over positions

Mr. Shekarau also denounced reports that quarrels over positions by the merging parties is responsible for the delay.

“There is simply the need to avoid confusion,” he said, adding that “for instance if ACN submits a candidate from Kogi and ANPP from Nasarawa, that will naturally bring about confusion due to the fact that the two states are from the north central”.

He said the merger committee decided to take time and sort out all grey areas before announcing a standing executive committee.

Mr. Shekarau did not, however, mention the positions to be held by each nominee in the interim executive to be submitted to the electoral body.
