Laha Commends Brf on judges,Lagos now has 56 Judges

 

The Lagos State House of Assembly has commended Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), Governor of Lagos State for the recent appointment of six new judges in Lagos State.

Speaking on Monday, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Strategy, Security and Publicity, Hon. Segun Olulade stressed that the import of having more judges is to ensure that the course of justice is advanced in the state and the country at large.

Hon. Olulade maintained that the increasing profile of judges in the state has helped tremendously in helping to address the puzzle of accumulated unheard cases and to reduce the congestion of detainees awaiting trials in police custody.

According to him, ‘’Presently, Lagos State has no fewer than 56 judges and well over 100 magistrates spread across the state. This speaks volume of the extent to which the Lagos State judiciary is getting more and more prepared to surmount the mounting challenge of justice administration given the high population density of the state.’’

The lawmaker added that the Lagos State does not only have the highest number of judges and magistrates among the federating units of Nigeria, but has also gone further in the last ten years, through her Justice Ministry, to invent several novel programmes such as the establishment of the Office of Public Defender, Citizens’ Mediation Centre and the Multi-Door Open Dispute Resolution programme, with a view to deepening the cause of peace, conflict management, harmony, justice and fair play in the state.

However, while congratulating the six new judges on their new appointment as judges of High Courts in the State, Olulade urged them to avail the opportunity of their new placement to further bring sanity, integrity and nobility to the nation’s judiciary through their individual characters and collective efforts at ensuring that the common man on the street is not denied justice, adding that they should continue to see themselves as the custodians of law, justice and probity in the societ
