Governor Olusegun Mimiko Campaign Organization (MCO) and Akeredolu Independent Campaign Network (ICN) yesterday differed sharply on the use of fake dollars to induce voters ahead of next week governorship election in Ondo State .
While the MCO through its spokesperson, Mr Kolawole Olabisi alleged that the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and its candidate were planning to induce voters with fake American dollars, the ICN through its spokesperson, Mr Bosun Oladimeji said the Labour Party (LP) has also opened its flank on what it was planning to do ahead of the election.
Olabisi alleged that the leadership of the ACN had perfected an ingenious but illegal plan to buy votes and disenfranchise unsuspecting voters in the State with fake dollar notes.
He alleged that this was the highlight of a meeting held in Lagos on Tuesday evening, following serious financial crisis now staring the party in the face owing to billions of Naira already spent on to prosecute the state election.
But Oladimeji said there was no need for the party or its campaign organization to use fake dollar notes to disenfranchise voters because the party was poised to win the election.
According to him, ACN has six states and funding could come from any of the states just as there are businessmen who are members of the party who are funding the party.
Olabisi had said the financial burden on Ondo election was already taking its toll on the five ACN controlled States in the South West which are the major contributors to the Ondo election war chest.
The MCO alleged that cash crunch had hit Osun state as the government has withdrawn huge amount of money from banks for the Ondo election in the last four weeks.
Olabisi alleged that last week, over N2 billion was withdrawn from the State Government’s accounts in banks in Osogbo, the State capital while over N3 billion was siphoned from Local Governments’ accounts in Lagos State, adding that the implications of this was that LG workers in Lagos State would not collect last month and this month’s salaries on time.
He said Ekiti, which has taken the unenviable position of the operational base of the onslaught against Ondo, was equally reeling under this yoke while its government and workers are at daggers drawn.
His words “Now that it has become glaring that the Ondo election would not be a push over owing to the huge popularity of Dr Olusegun Mimiko whose rating has continued to soar, the ACN leaders have in their desperation to bribe voters; buy at least 500 voters’ cards from each ward in the Ondo Central where Governor Mimiko comes from and where there is a high density of voters and pay other sundry expenses of those to be imported as thugs; pay fake Civil Defence corps members; fake Youth Corps members; fake policemen and army amongst others, they have resorted to use fake dollars.
