Pics of the Day! Collapsed Building in Lagos

 A three-storey building at 3, Anikantamo Street, in the Adeniji-Adele area of Lagos, collapsed, yesterday, rendering about 30 families homeless.

At press time, the number of casualties could not be ascertained. But  Managing Director of the  Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Oke- Osanyintolu, told Vanguard that there was none. Some occupants of the building, including a 60-year-old woman, reportedly sustained injuries.

Report said the incident occurred at 12.45 pm, following a loud bang which jostled residents of the area. It was reliably gathered that the building, constructed 10 years ago, had signs of imminent collapse.

One of the occupants, who gave his name as  Areo, said some officials from Alausa Secretariat visited the area last year and advised the  owner to carry out some renovation on  the building. “ Our landlord promised to do so. He even collected two years rent from us to carry out the renovation. But he never did it,” he said.

I really do not know what would have become of me. I only went out to buy something and by the time I came back, the building had caved in. I have lost everything “, Areo lamented.

As at 6pm, rescue operation was still on , with policemen, officials of LASEMA, National Emergency Management Agency and Civil defense at the scene.

Managing Director , LASEMA, Dr Osayintolu , said, “occupants on the first, second and third floors have been evacuated. Howeever , rescue effort is still in progress on the ground floor  to ensure no one was trapped.

On his part, spokes person for the  National Emergency Management Agency , Ibrahim Farinloye said “The occupants of the house are being assisted to retrieve their belongings while the next building to the collapsed one will be demolished to guard against further threat” .
