It is no longer news that the Lagos state Government has since the 12th of July 2012 commenced the demolition of the popular Makoko Slum, a settlement we hear has been in place since the mid 1800s. From all indication, the Lagos state Government has good intentions for doing so and has cited “protection of lives and property,  creation of legitimate economic opportunities on the waterfront and beautification of the Lagos coastline” as major reasons for the evacuation.

However, evacuating thousands of people from their homes without making adequate provision for a better alternative is not the way to go about it. How are these people supposed to cope? Won’t this have a negative social impact on Lagos state? The questions are endless with very few answers at the moment.
