Today the 20th day of July, an oil vessel carrying crude oil has caught fire in Abuloma wharf in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Fire services and National Emergency Management Agency officials are still battling to put out the fire.
One of the NEMA expressed concerned about the spread of the fire to other tankers in the jetty if the fire is not curtailed immediately.
Residents in the Abuloma community said some 26 persons might have died in the tanker inferno. The vessel reportedly belongs to Nestoil.
Also on Abali Eleka road, around the Rumuokechi area of Port Harcourt, another fire has been put out after five gasoline tankers caught fire. The Joint Task Force in the area averted a major fire disaster as they stopped residents from scooping gasoline from the tankers shortly before they caught fire. The JTF has barricaded off the area.
