A former Secretary to the Federal Government, Chief Olu Falae, on Sunday, alleged that some swindlers hacked his e-mail and wanted to use it to defraud his friends.
Falae, who was also a former finance minister and presidential candidate, said the swindlers hacked his e-mail address ([email protected]) and sent messages to his friends within and outside the country, seeking financial assistance.
A statement in Akure by Falae’s Personal Assistant, Capt. Moshood Raji (retd.), said the fraudsters claimed that Falae travelled to Spain and got stranded after he lost his wallet which contained money and vital documents.
The statement reads, “The attention of Chief Olu Falae has just been drawn to an e-mail sent to well meaning individuals and especially friends of Chief Olu Falae all over the world, indicating that I, Capt. M.A Raji, is seeking financial assistance from them.
“The contents of the e-mail message apparently meant to dupe numerous friends of Chief Olu Falae claim that he is on a trip to Spain for a programme and he is having some difficulties there.
“The e-mail claimed that Chief Olu Falae misplaced his wallet on his way to the hotel where his money and credit cards were kept. The fraudulent e-mail then seeks for 2,500 euros (N507,500) to enable him to return to Nigeria.
“Many of Chief Olu Falae’s friends have received the fraudulent messages. In their desperate bid to ensure that Chief Olu Falae friends fall victim, the e-mail appealing for urgent attention, claims that passport and other things are being kept with the hotel management pending when he will make the payment.
“Dear friends of Chief Olu Falae, please ignore the contents of the e-mail in it’s entirety as the message does not emanate from Chief Olu Falae or his Personal Assistant.
“In fact, neither Chief Olu Falae nor his PA who is quoted to having sent the e-mail has made any trip to Spain in recent time while Chief Olu Falae has remained in Nigeria pursuing his legitimate business.”
