Lagos Mulls Sanctions for Corrupt LG Officials

It will no longer be business as usual for corrupt Local Government officials in Lagos State, as the Committee on Reformation of the Local Government Administration has recommended a stiffer sanctions for corrupt council administrators.

Obviously not amused by poor performance of the Local Government

Councils across the state, the state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode had before now constituted a committee to look at the ways the councils can be reformed for optimal performance to enhance development of the state.

Presenting the recommendation and findings of the committee to the state Head of Service, Mrs Folashade Jaji,the Committee Chairman, Otunba Nurudeen Ojora-Adejiyan said the committee discovered that the local government system had deviated from its primary objectives leading to disconnect between communities and managers of council areas.

According to Ojora-Adejiyan, the committee made an array of recommendations, including a review of administration laws and sanctions on local government personnel involved in fraudulent practices.

“A sanction to be strictly applied on officials and Local Government personnel involved in fraudulent financial practices. We also recommend that the welfare of Obas and Chiefs should be enhanced for more responsive participation in Local Government revenue mobilisation, security and other auxiliary functions.

“Also, a function template to assess performance of the Local government based on available resources and context of operations should be evolved for the Local Government system.”

Ojora-Adejiyan urged the Lagos state government to implement some of the committee’s recommendations within the next 100 days.

Receiving the committee’s report the state’s Head of Service, Mrs Folasade Jaji lauded the members for completing the task in record time.

She said in anticipation of the Committee’s report, the state Governor Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode had held series of meetings with major stakeholders on the impending reforms.
